Part-time Lecturer

Ljuzem Madiljin works as an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Dance, Tainan

University of Technology and the founder and artistic director of Tjimur Dance

Theatre. She was born in Sandimen Village (Timur Tribe), Sandimen Township,

Pingtung County, Taiwan, to Paiwan parents. She had obtained a bachelor’s degree in

Dance from the Tainan University of Technology and a master’s degree in cultural

and creative industries and served as a board member of the National Performing Arts

Center. She has been living in the tribe for a long time, playing the roles of passing on

the traditional cultures and teaching cultures and arts of dance and music.

In 2006, Ljuzem founded the first professional contemporary dance company

focusing on the Paiwan culture in Taiwan, called “Tjimur Dance Theatre” and has

organized the performances of 15 pieces from 2009 to 2021 and led the team to

perform in various countries in Europe and Asia. In 2014, she created the Paiwan

contemporary dance teaching system for the purpose of exploring and studying the

breathing method used by the Paiwan people while dancing in coordination with

singing, to further develop the Paiwan contemporary body training, which goes

beyond dancers’ physical inertia and continuously helps them to develop their

potentials and put their limits.

It’s been 15 years since the founding of the Theatre. And all the way Ljuzem has

insisted on sharing the aesthetics of the Paiwan culture and philosophy through

performing arts and kept on creating possibilities for the diversified development of

contemporary theatres of indigenous people. In 2017, the “Tjimur Arts Festival” was

founded, facilitating the conversation between the tribal culture and arts and the world.

Meanwhile, Madiljin has also been promoting activities such as the tribe tour program,

the residence programs with facilities in cities, and arts and culture promotion events,

facilitating the promotion of arts in Taiwan.
